23 was a very good year for Gav’s LP habit

  • The Chris Hinze Combination “Stoned Flute” - CBS 5 64213. Porto Flea Market

  • Charlie Mariano with the Chris Hinze Combination -FLP 40114. Elastic Rock, Rome

  • As we mentioned in the Podcast, Chris Hinze seems to have retired just as Gav found out who he was, playing his farewell concert at the Concertgebouw in November of 2023. We would dearly love to have him on the podcast to talk about his journey. In the meantime, here’s a clip from an earlier Chris Hinze show that shows his later interest in ambient music.

  • David Sylvian “Brilliant Trees” - Virgin 625605 Discos do Bau, Porto.

  • Chet Baker “The Köln Concert 1955,vol.1” Naked Lunch ND017

  • Heiner Goebbels/ Heiner Müller “Der Mann im Fahrstuhl” ECM 1369

both purchased from Discos Marcapasos, Granada.

I really needed to put up a video in which this band sounds a less wrecked than they do on the live recording. Twardzik’s solo here is full of surprises.

  • HERE is a link to a full description of Der Mann im Fahrstuhl

  • Black Midi “Hellfire” - Rough Trade RT 0321LP (Birthday present from Lottie)

This was Gav’s introduction to Black Midi…might I suggest that even if you don’t care for Black Midi, you watch this? They listen to some pretty hip stuff!

  • Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers “Club St Germain Vol.1” RCA LPM 10073

  • Sando Watanabe “Parker’s Mood” WEA 252-668-1

Both from Welcome to the Jungle, Rome.

This needs surely no introduction..

…but Gav was unfamiliar with Sando Watanabe. here’s the full show on YouTube!

  • Miles Davis Octet “Live at the Jazz Gipfel Stuttgart” DBQP 44. Elastic Rock, Rome

…Whilst we’re on the subject of records of live concerts that are available as videos on YouTube, here’s the Miles show.

  • Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet “Dusk Fire” Jman LP 108x. Materia Prima ,Porto.

A couple of years after the recording of Dusk Fire, here’s the same band in a rare video clip.

  • McCoy Tyner “New York Reunion” Chesky Records JR51. 8MM Records, Porto

(We talked about this a little during the Thelonius Monk show, check out Joe Henderson’s version of “Ask me now”)

  • Joe Harriot Quintet “Free Form” Destination Moon DM00052. 8MM Records, Porto

HERE is a link to a very interesting appreciation of Joe Harriot by Soweto Kinch

  • Archie Shepp/Niels- Henning Orsted Pedersen “Looking at Bird” - Dargil SCS-1149

  • Joshua Redman “Come What May” Nonesuch 7599-79267.4

Both from The Record Fair at Maus Habitos, Porto.

There’s a whole load of reviews of the Shepp/Pedersen recording, all of which make you yearn for an interview with the man himself, so HERE it is!

Finally, HERE is a Joshua Redman interview from around the same time as Come What May.

A Word of Thanks…

This was by no means all the vinyl I bought this year, but I would like to use this space to thank all the shops and organisations that provided me with joy this year. We sadly lost Double Decker in Allentown, P.A. this year…I don’t count a second that I spent in any of these places as wasted time, THANK YOU ALL!!!

…which looks like this!!!
