Thanks Tom and Gav for making this excellent podcast. I never thought I'd hear anyone else talk about this strange and wonderful film. As a novice Wagner listener, Tony Palmer's film has been immensely helpful to gaining an introduction to both the music and the historical context. In the anthology of Solti's opera recordings, I've located almost all of the pieces that Palmer used in the score. However, there is one exception that I can't find in any of the Solti records: a soft, haunting horn theme that is used several times throughout the movie. One example occurs at 57:43 in this video (part 2 of the version posted by Gonzo TV): https://youtu.be/7wDi1814Bsg?t=2395 . Could one of you aficionados please tell me where that horn piece comes from? Many thanks.

Dear Neil, thank you for listening to our podcast, we're so glad to have you on board! I think the music you're asking about comes from one of the Wesendonk Lieder, which would explain why you can't find it amongst any of the Operas. The Wesendonk Lieder were using texts written by Mathilde Wesendonk for voice and piano as studies for later operas and the tune you are talking about comes from the third one, "Im Treibhaus", which is subtitled "a study for Tristan und Isolde". Enjoy the rest!

Hi Gavin, thanks for pointing that out. I did listen to the "Treibhaus" lieder, which is beautiful, but is different from the excerpt I am looking for. I have also realized a mistake in my post above - the horn piece I am looking for occurs at 40:00 in the video I linked, not 57:43 (I mixed up a bookmark with a different version on youtube). If you can please look again at just that time, let me know if you recognize it :)

Glad to hear it Neil! It's cool that this film/tv-series can still serve as an introduction to the music of Wagner. Gav forced me to watch it all in one go (or else!) but you can easily see how if it were on TV or a streaming service, packaged in manageable chunks, it could very nicely serve this purpose. I don't think we mentioned that in the ep. More damned rank amateurism on our part, I'm sorry to say (‡ಠ╭╮ಠ)
